“You can not be afraid if you’re laughing.” So says Bernie Siegel, author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles, the groundbreaking book that convinced countless patients that they can help themselves heal. Siegel — quick to say, ‘Call me Bernie’ — was kind enough to sit down with the JNJ crew and share his thoughts on what he calls the keys to life: love and laughter.

15 Minutes of Fame

I thought I’d seen everything in my 22 years of nursing, but this takes the cake: we had a patient bring a digital recorder to the procedure! He asked us to make sure it was switched on while he was in recovery – he wanted to ‘capture’ the sounds of his farts and upload them to the internet!

I guess every one wants to be famous for something!

Marsha took a deep cleansing breath before entering Room 519. It was only midnight, and she already answered Mrs. Gorski’s call light four times. The evening nurse had given Mrs. G. a Halcion at 9:30 and assured Marsha she would sleep through the night. Another empty promise.

“What took you so long?” Mrs. G whined. “I called 10 minutes ago. What if it had been an emergency? I could be dead by now..maybe that would be a good thing. I wish I were dead.”

“Mrs. Gorski,” Marsha said calmly, “I saw your light go on from down the hall. I finished what I was doing and came directly to your room. I’ve been in here five times, and I really do need to check my other patients before it gets much later. Now, what can I do for you?” (more…)

Bedside Manners: ‘Being’ at your Next Unit Meeting: How to Enjoy Confrontation with your Most Troublesome Nursing Colleague by Patricia L Raymond, MD FACP FACG

Of course, here I’m assuming that one of your colleagues is in fact troublesome. But from what I hear, nursing is like every work situation. There is likely to be one person who doesn’t pull their weight. Who’s so cranky no one will work with them. Who calls in sick, a lot. Usually on Mondays. Who’s _____________ (fill in your own personal blank here).

And then comes your monthly staff meeting…where nobody says a thing. Where nothing changes. Where you continue to be assigned the role of slack-meister, taking up the slack for these dullards. Not doing anything. Sound familiar? We call this being an appeaser.

Who Knew? Heaven Can Wait!

After living to a ripe old age, Dr. Jones, a world-famous surgeon, passed away during his sleep. He found himself at the back of an extremely long line leading up to the Pearly Gates.

After waiting what seemed like an eternity, Dr. Jones decided that he shouldn’t have to wait in line. He walked up to the Pearly Gates and said to St. Peter, “I’m Dr. Benny Jones, world famous surgeon. While on earth, I saved many lives and cured countless illnesses. I don’t think I should have to wait in this line.”

St. Peter curtly replied, “Here in Heaven, everyone is treated the same. Now go back to the end of the line.”

As he walked to the back of the line, he noticed a gentleman in a white lab coat with a leather bag and stethoscope, obviously a doctor, walk up to the front of the line. St. Peter waved him right through.

Furious, Dr. Jones ran up to St. Peter and shouted, “Why did that doctor get to go right through?”

St. Peter smiled and said, “Oh, that was God. Sometimes he just likes to play doctor.”
